COMMANDER FREDERICK S. ADAIR

Commander Frederick S. ADAIR was born September 25, 1929 in Seattle, Washington and grew up there. He is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Class of 1952. His first duty upon commissioning was on the USS MENARD (APA - 20 1) where he served in various billets. After attendance at the CIC Officer School in Glenview, Illinois, he served in the recommissioning crew of USS SAV- AGE (DER-386) as Operations Officer. In December 1956 he assumed command of USS TILLAMOOK (ATA - 192). operating in Northern Pacific waters at that time.

Commander ADAIR was selected for entry in the Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program in July 1957. For two years he was involved in the testing and operation of the prototype large ship Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant in Southeastern Idaho. Subsequently, he served in the commissioning crew of USS LONG BEACH (CGN-9). first as Reactor Officer and later as Main Propulsion Assistant.

Later tours of duty have included, in order: Executive Officer, USS NOA (DD-841); The Office of the Secretary of Defense as Staff Assistant to the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense (Atomic Energy); Attendance at the Armed Forces Staff College; Surface Operations Officer on the Staff of Commander, Naval Forces, Vietnam; and lastly as Commanding Officer USS HUBBARD (DD-748). Awards include the Legion of Merit and the Joint Services Commendation Medal.

Commander ADAIR is married to the former Mary Jane Malsbary of Romney, Indiana. They have three children; Katherine 12, John 9, and Elizabeth 7. The Adair family currently resides in Westminster, California.    Oct 1969
