COMMANDER George R. Wells Birth: 1919 George was born in Hackensack, NJ in 1919. After attending Rutgers University, he joined the US Navy and was commissioned as an officer in 1940. He served in the Pacific during WWII on submarines and surface vessels. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions. After the war, he married Carolyn E. Smith and continued his naval career with assignments ashore and afloat including command of the USS Mullany(DD528) and the USS Kankakee(AO39). He retired from the Navy in 1961, having achieved the rank of Commander. He moved with his family to the Ithaca area in 1962 and had a second career in business and personnel management with the Ithaca City Schools and BOCES. George was an active member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Ithaca. He also volunteered locally with United Way, the Boy Scouts, the Sea Scouts, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Cayuga Heights Fire Department. He enjoyed studying maritme history and the Bible, spending time with his family and attending reunions with his shipmates. George was predeceased by a infant daughter, Miriam and his sisters, Juanita Vandermark of Newfield and Dorothy Fessenden. George is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Rob and wife Sharon of Bellingham, WA; son, Wesley and wife Peggy of Ithaca; and grandsons, Brenton and Trevor. A memorial service is being planned with interment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery. Burial:
