Interesting story. I had read the condensed story pulished in the Readers Digest. This explained how the story got it title. Aubrey W. Nichols my uncle was killed on April 6, 1945 aboard the Mullany at Okinawa.

Last month was confined to a hospital bed in Saginaw MI and my room-mate served on the Mullany in the early 50s as a gunners mate, Ernest Marsh. Being confined to the hospital was not pleasant for either of us, but we had a great time trading tall tales

I served on the Mullany from 1970 to decommissing. I was a SK2. Would like to hear from my Shipmate David Wellington. The Mullany was a great ship and it was an honor to serve on her along with many great shipmates.

Served on her jul64-oct65 time frame as a QM1. Remember shore bombardment missions off Vietnam and the picking up of the two pilots (bodies) as we were plane guarding and they crashed and died. A good crew and proud to have been a tincan sailor.

Foley:
Your cooking was the best; remember it well. Always there for some great samples.

Cmdr Perry Maxwell: your Dad was a wonderful inspiration to a new ensign. Had many skippers in the fleet...he was the finest.

My grandfather Sylvan Forsberg was a gunners mate on the Mullany. There's a photo of him on this site that I was delighted to discover today.
